Buxus sempervirens
A slow-growing, evergreen shrub which makes an incredibly versatile garden plant. It's tight habit allows for it to be clipped easily either to form a formal, low hedge or into topiary shapes. It is happy growing in full sun, though with dry soil as well this can lead to leaf scorch, so regular watering would be recommended in such a situation. It will also benefit from a good foliar feed to encourage the leaves to maintain their deep green colour.
Cornus Flaviramea
A good medium-sized shrub with bright golden-yellow bare stems in winter and small white flowers in late spring. Coupled with ovate, bright green leaves which turn red and orange in autumn, make this a brilliant all-year-round plant.
Cuprocyparis Castlewellan
A vigorous, columnar, evergreen conifer with flat sprays of golden yellow foliage. Ideal for creating a fast-growing hedge and for screening.
Griselinia littoralis
A fast-growing, evergreen shrub ideal for screening relatively quickly, with bright green, glossy leaves and bearing small, insignificant green flowers in spring sometimes followed by purple fruits.
Griselinia littoralis Variegata
A useful shrub for screening or filling a large area fairly quickly. It has an upright habit with leathery, glossy, green leaves heavily mottled with creamy-white markings. In spring it bears small, insignificant green flowers and occasionally purple fruits in autumn.
Ilex aquifolium
Holly is a very slow growing plant, and easily pruned to the size required, so don't be put off by it's potential size! Lustrous, glossy, dark green, spiny leaves throughout the year with red berries in autumn and winter.
Ligustrum ovalifolium Aureum
A large, dense, evergreen shrub with rich yellow, oval leaves, often with green markings at the centre. It bears small panicles of creamy white flowers in summer followed by small black berries. An excellent hedging plant.
Photinia Little Red Robin
A compact, upright, dwarf evergreen shrub with glossy, eliptic leaves which are bright red when young and turn a deep green with age. In spring, it bears panicles of small, creamy-white flowers often followed by red fruits.
Prunus Brenelia
Ideal as a hedging plant but equally good as a stand-alone specimen and can even be used for topiary. Evergreen with dark green foliage and dark red stems producing clusters of white flowers in summer.
Prunus lusitanica
A large, evergreen shrub or tree which being easy to trim to size and shape, makes it a good, reliable, hedging plant. The dark red shoots bear large, glossy green leaves and in early summer is covered in large racemes of fragrant white flowers.
Prunus Rotundifolia
A strong-growing, bushy shrub of upright habit with twisted, oblong, glossy, green leaves producing racemes of fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by cherry-like, red fruits, ripening to black.
Taxus baccata
An evergreen conifer / tree with leathery, green, needle-like leaves. It can grow to a height of 20m or more but is easily pruned to maintain the height and shape required. It is a superb plant for formal hedging owing to the density of its foliage and its tolerance to pruning. It can also be used for creating topiary.
